Plugins Extend is Great

March 20th, 2007

Thank you Wordpress!!! The team over at WP added a plugin extend section to the site. I am always looking for plugins and want community feed back on the plugins. Many of the sites I found really did not give you good information on the plugins and ratings. I did find some personal blogs who do a really good job reviewing plugins but no one central location for reviews and information about plugins.

I am very excited by this new community feature built around the plugins available for the Wordpress software. Bravo!

Check out the site here.

WordPress 2.1.1 Hacked

March 4th, 2007

WordPress 2.1.1 Dangerous to upgrade.

From Matt’s site:
“Long story short: If you downloaded WordPress 2.1.1 within the past 3-4 days, your files may include a security exploit that was added by a cracker, and you should upgrade all of your files to 2.1.2 immediately.”

I love WP but I have found it to have security issues. WP has become a love hate relationship. The software is top notch in features and its free. The downside is it does have security issues that can be very serious. So it’s very important to stay on top of updates. You can read more here: http://wordpress.org/development/2007/03/upgrade-212/

Case Study Movie Download Spot

November 28th, 2006

Site status prior:
The Domain was purchased in June of 2006. I immediately installed a Wordpress blog and added 5 to 10 original blog entries. The blog post where rich with targeted keywords. The site did not have any back links. Therefore the site was not indexed in Google, Yahoo or MSN.

I started adding video posts from many of the most popular video sites and add brief original comments rich with timely and searched keywords, for example the Kramer incident.

I also placed no ads on site. With all the talk of “Page Quality Scoring” I wanted to have a site that was not trying to monetize traffic with Google ads. The thought was get this site listed and traffic and back links rolling in and then add in Google ads if I feel the need.

Yahoo Visits First:
Less than 24 hours after starting to post Yahoo search bots started to spider the site. Then on Friday I believe I got a visit from a human editor at Yahoo and the next day I am on the first and second page for terms like: ”movie download forum,” “Movie Download RSS,” and “Movie Download Blog.”

Google showed up on Friday and I have a few terms showing up in pages 6 and 7 of their index. However on their blog search results I show up on the first page for very competitive terms. This of course is short lived as these results change very often.

Number Tracking:

I started to post on Wednesday 11-22-06 and here are the numbers so far:

Day Date Page Loads Unique Visitors First Time Visitors Returning Visitors
Saturday 11/18/06 0 0 0 0
Sunday 11/19/06 0 0 0 0
Monday 11/20/06 0 0 0 0
Tuesday 11/21/06 0 0 0 0
Wednesday 11/22/06 21 14 12 2
Thursday 11/23/06 114 56 48 8
Friday 11/24/06 163 70 63 7
Saturday 11/25/06 29 21 16 5
Traffic sources:

The only traffic source I used was pinging Technorati.

I did not use any back links from other domains
I did not use PPC traffic

Site Status 11-25-06

Site is now indexed in Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

SERP

Yahoo:
Keyword Page Number
movie download forum 2 18
movie video downloads 6 56
movie download rss 1 2
movie download blog 2 12

Site Activity:
On average a single visitor is viewing 3 pages.

Features which help retain visitors:
• Like results searching
• Related post suggestions
• Most recent post in right navigation
• User can rate each post

Next steps:
Keep posting
Change the layout
Add most favorite post list
Add links from other sites
Add more editors
Conclusion

Posting high search content with original annotation is the foundation of obtaining Search Engine Traffic. The site must have SEO pages. The site is built using Wordpress software which has been modified to have proper on page optimization. (There is room for improvement put over all it will do for now.)

Original content with suggested content is the key to keeping traffic and building a organically linkable site.

More Back Links

November 16th, 2006

Do you want more back links? Of course you do? If you are trying to get any of your sites ranked in any of the major search engines you need quality one way back links.

I found a blog that had a list of over 401 free web directories. You can see the full list here.

I can’t vouch for the list but a spot check did show some of the directories had some PR 2 values on the homepage but nothing on the sub pages. Most of the sites had no Google PR value so I am not sure how much help this list really will be. However it does appear to be free to list.  Do you get what you pay for? I will let you guys be the judge. So list with caution and let me know if you have any luck.

Auto Starting Programs

November 16th, 2006

Today I found a great piece of advice regarding your computer. Does your computer take forever to start up? Mine does for several reasons. But the main reason is I have to many programs launching at start up. 90% of them I do not need on start up.

It turns out the default setting for most programs on installation set them to start on start up. So how can you fix this with out trying to go to all the programs you can think of and try to turn this feature off?

Here is the simple solution:

Click Start > Run and type “msconfig” at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need “Adobe Reader Speed Launch”? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable Windows system components.

Thank you Yahoo answers!! This is a great bit of advice.

As with anything computer related be careful you are not disabling something vital to the computer working. So if in doubt leave it alone. This tip now has my system staring up like it did when I first got it.

$100,000 a year

October 27th, 2006

I have found the best way to make money is to pick something and keep with it. Find something you love and make a business around it. Success comes when you have research, a plan and most important action. Take action. With out action it’s just a dream.

No one makes $100,000 a year by buying a tape set and working three hours a week. The secret is no secret at all; work hard, save and don’t go into debt.

PlentyofFish video

October 18th, 2006

Have you heard of PlentyofFish.com? Maybe not but this site is run by one person and gets a huge amount of traffic. He competes with the largest dating websites and beats them. A Google AdSense inspiration. Check out this interview I found on youtube:

P.S. he makes about $300,000 plus a month

What is a Link Worth

October 18th, 2006

i found this post on John Chow’s blog via Digg today. He shows how much a link on the major tech sites would cost you.

Here are some samples:

Engadget - $11,440

Gizmodo - $11,440

Others like Digg or Slashdot you can’t even put a price tag on. Head over to John’s website to see the whole post…

Not all links are worth the same. Links from big sites with high Page Rank are worth far more than smaller sites with low Page Rank. So how much is a link worth?

The Other Google Update

October 5th, 2006

So after I posted about the new google smash up called searchmash the site stopped working. For every search I did I got an error. See the image below. Search Mash

searchmash

Also a side note. After my post a real person from Google visited my site. I confirmed in my logs it was not a bot. Strange?
